Hello from Maimu!
Spring news, concerts & exciting projects 🌸🌿
Dear friends,
Thank you so much for joining my mailing list! I'm excited to send you this first update – a mix of recent happenings, upcoming concerts, and projects I’m working on! 😍 It’s been on my mind for ages to start a mailing list, and today, on the international accordion day, I’m finally doing it! 🪗🎶🎉
🌟 Recent highlights
This past weekend (May 3–4), I had the joy of working with UK accordionist Heather Ferrier, who is gathering inspiration for her upcoming album. She reached out to have a weekend of playing together, and it turned into a rich exchange – composing new music, diving into traditional tunes from Estonia, Finland and the UK, and just having a good old jam! It's a pleasure and a special treat to connect through music like this, especially since it's rarely possible after graduating from music institutions to find the time and resources to just meet up and play. I'm glad we had that chance, and hopefully this is just the beginning of our collaboration! 🥰✨
🗓️🎶 Upcoming concerts & collaborations
You can find all dates, times & tickets for upcoming gigs from my website. Here are some highlights happening in the next two months:
May 11 – I'll be performing in the master's concert of my friends Vija Moore and Kärt Tambet, Global Music students at the Sibelius Academy. It's at Musiikkitalo, Helsinki at 20:00. I feel honored to be invited among many beautiful and talented musicians! Facebook event here!
May 15 – I’ll be joining a Finnish folk music band called Lapua Uusi Guinea as a substitute for a gig! It's exciting (and a bit nerve-wracking) to be learning their repertoire now – especially since I’ll be both playing and singing!
May 28–29 – With Alterne, we'll perform at the Merode Festival in Belgium
June 1 – With Alterne, we'll play at Muziekcentrum De Bijloke (Ghent, Belgium).
June 3 – With Alterne, we bring our music back to Finland with a concert in Suomenlinna, Helsinki.
June 5-8 – We’ll head to Germany to teach at a music camp with Alterne at https://www.lagfolk.de. We will perform as well as give daily workshops during the camp. My workshop is called “Folk Music from Estonia: Bridging Nordic Traditions” – introducing traditional Estonian tunes and exploring stylistic elements of Nordic folk music.
June 7–14 – With Alterne we have a residency on Fanø island, Denmark, where we’ll begin creating music for our second album.
June 21 – A special one ✨ my solo album release concert for "Nordic Reflections", happening at Käesalu Art Centre (Estonia) as part of a Midsummer celebration with dancing, fire, traditional food, and more. Tickets from here!
💿 New Release
I'm also thrilled to share that Hostikka, a band I play in, will release our new album on May 9! We’ve poured a lot into this recording, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. More info, listening links, and stories behind the music coming soon! Follow us on Instagram and get the latest updates!
☕ Barista Maimu?!?!
If you didn’t yet know, I am a licensed barista! 🤩 I will be sharing my knowledge already on the 17th of May at Cafetoria in Helsinki. More info on Cafetoria’s website. Sign up and learn how to brew a great cup of coffee at home with a V60 brewer!
🌊 Looking ahead
In June, I’ll also start an exciting new project on a ferry between Tallinn and Stockholm – but more about that in the next newsletter!
Thank you again for following along. Your support means so much 😊 If you know someone who might enjoy this journey too, feel free to forward this newsletter or invite them to sign up.
With warmth,
Maimu
